First records of pollen rain in bromeliad tanks in an area of caatinga in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Gomes,Jéssica Mirella de Souza; Lima,Luciene Cristina Lima e; Santos,Francisco de Assis Ribeiro dos; Silva,Francisco Hilder Magalhães e.
Species of Bromeliaceae have leaves in a spiral configuration. Because of the shape of the rosette thus formed and the imbricate configuration of the leaf sheaths, there is usually a tank in which rainwater and other components of the environment, including pollen grains, accumulate, making such tanks effective pollen rain collectors. The objective of this study was to use bromeliads as a tool to increase knowledge about the vegetation of the caatinga (shrublands) in the Canudos region of the state of Bahia, located in the semi-arid zone of Brazil, as well as to analyze the dynamics of pollen dispersal and deposition. To that end, we collected samples of the water from the tanks of bromeliads at the Canudos Biological Station. A total of 149 pollen types...

Geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads of the Una region, Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Fontoura,Talita; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos.
Many Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest plant and animal species are geographically restricted to Southern Bahia and Northern Espírito Santo States. We investigated the geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in the lowland forest of the Una region (15° 17' 34' S - 39° 04' 30'' W) in Southern Bahia. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: i) what is the extent of each species distribution?; and ii) are the Bromeliaceae subfamilies distributed differently from one another? Almost half of the 40 species (47.5%) occur exclusively in the Southern Bahia-Northern Espírito Santo region and are herein referred as endemic species. The highest percentage of the 15 species of Tillandsioideae (46.7%) occur throughout the South American Continent and...

Habitat utilization and CAM occurrence among epiphytic bromeliads in a dry forest from southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Fontoura,Talita; Reinert,Fernanda.
We studied the community and habitat occupation of epiphytes to understand how these plants cope with a supposedly stressful habitat: i) how general epiphytes occupy tree trunks, ii) how epiphytic bromeliads, occupy their supportive trees, iii) how CAM bromeliads are spatially distributed. The study was done in the dry forest of Jacarepiá, State of Rio de Janeiro. Data collection on epiphytes, phorophytes, and trees was based on the point-center quarter method. The photosynthetic pathway of the bromeliad species was determined using isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The presence of Gesneriaceae, Araceae, and Cactaceae indicates that some humidity is present in the area allowing the presence of supposedly less-specialized epiphytes. There was no correlation...

In vitro culture at low temperature and ex vitro acclimatization of Vriesea inflata an ornamental bromeliad Rev. Bras. Bot.
Pedroso,Andrea Nunes Vaz; Lazarini,Rosmari Aparecida de Morais; Tamaki,Vívian; Nievola,Catarina Carvalho.
(In vitro culture at low temperature and ex vitro acclimatization of Vriesea inflata an ornamental bromeliad). In vitro culture by seeds is a technique for preservation of threatened species because it may provide a large number of plants with genetic diversity. The bromeliad Vriesea inflata (Wawra) Wawra, an ornamental bromeliad, is extensively and illegally collected from the nature and must be preserved. It is possible to form plant threatened collections in vitro by reducing the temperature of culture, while occupying little space, with the consequent reduction of maintenance costs. This work evaluated the influence of temperature on in vitro growth and morphology of plants of V. inflata, with the aim of establishing a slow growth-rate and analyzing...

In vitro culture of Vriesea gigantea and Vriesea philippocoburgii: two vulnerable bromeliads native to Southern Brazil BABT
Droste,Annette; Silva,Anelise Machado da; Matos,Adriana Vieira; Almeida,Júlia Winck de.
Micropropagation studies were carried out using the seeds for establishing an in vitro culture of Vriesea gigantea and Vriesea philippocoburgii. Germination rate of V. gigantea was higher than of V. philippocoburgii. Plantlets of V. philippocoburgii gave rise to many adventitious shoots when cultivated in Knudson basal medium. In contrast, for V. gigantea, a higher salts-concentration was needed, so that the number of shoots was increased by Murashige and Skoog medium. Addition of activated charcoal and naphthaleneacetic acid in regeneration medium allowed the growth of shoots and the formation of roots, confirming the success of in vitro culture. The differences in expression of the genotypes reinforce the need of more research in order to set up the...

Macroinvertebrate fauna associated to the bromeliad Vriesea inflata of the Atlantic Forest (Paraná State, southern Brazil) BABT
Mestre,Luiz Augusto M.; Aranha,José Marcelo R.; Esper,Maria de Lourdes P..
The accumulated water inside the bromeliad leaf rosette is a microhabitat for several animal and plant species. In this study, the associated fauna of bromeliad Vriesea inflata was analyzed related to seasons, bromeliad height in relation to the ground and environmental factors. The samples were seasonally collected in Quatro Barras (a municipality of Paraná State, southern Brazil) between March 1996 and March 1997. The associated fauna was very rich and it was grouped in 23 taxonomic groups, with a dominance of Coleoptera Scirtidae, Diptera and Hymenoptera Formicidae. We found higher abundance of macroinvertebrates in terrestrial bromeliads during the spring/1996 and in epiphyte bromeliads in the autumn/1997.
